Shawn
Stefani retained his first round lead at Innisbrook with a battling
1-under-par round of 70 around the testing Copperhead course, but the
American domination of the tournament was disturbed by four
foreign-born champions charging early on the second day in the Tampa
Bay area, including three former Players Champions. Australian Adam
Scott put together another very impressive round without a bogey and
including five birdies to move into second place one shot adrift of
the lead. He is tied with Korean KJ Choi, the past winner of the
Tampa Bay Championship began the day with an eagle 3 at the first
hole and despite two bogeys on the back nine posted a four-under-par
67 to tie Scott on 6-under and one behind the 32-year-old Rookie
Stefani.
Harris
English, Brian Harman and Tag Ridings kept themselves in contention
on a day when Jason Dufner shot a 66 to move into contention for a
third PGA Tour title. Spain's Sergio Garcia birdied the 18th
to post a 4-under 67 to move 3 behind the lead, South Africa's George
Coetzee moved to 3-under as a total of 30 players broke par for the
first two rounds in a championship where the cut came at 2-over-par.
9 shots cover the entire field going into the weekend and we are set
for another compelling finale to a tournament on the Florida Swing,
especially with the daunting Snake Pit lying in wait to devour the
hopes of the contenders on Sunday night. Another stellar list of
contenders are ready to pounce in a field full of young, promising
and inexperienced Americans.
